Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMB Yogya) which was previously established under the name IPW (Institut Pertanian Wangsa Manggala or Wangsa Manggala Agricultural Institute) in 1984, which later changed its name to Universitas Wangsa Manggala or Wangsa Manggala University (UNWAMA) in 1986 and changed its name to Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta in 2008.

Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMB Yogya) which was previously established under the name IPW (Institut Pertanian Wangsa Manggala or Wangsa Manggala Agricultural Institute) in 1984, which later changed its name to Universitas Wangsa Manggala or Wangsa Manggala University (UNWAMA) in 1986 and changed its name to Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta in 2008.

The name of Universitas Wangsa Manggala (UNWAMA) was born on October 1, 1986 under the auspices of the Wangsa Manggala Foundation. When it was founded, UNWAMA had 3 faculties with 4 departments, as the rector was Prof. Ir. Gembong Tjitrorosoepomo (late) Professor of the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). As an experienced academic, he has laid a strong foundation for the development of UNWAMA.

Entering its 7th year (1993) under the leadership of Rector Prof. Dr. Soelistyo, MBA (Professor of the Faculty of Economics, UGM) UNWAMA developed by adding new faculties and study programs, namely opening the Faculty of Psychology and opening the Management Study Program and Accounting Study Program (both under the Faculty of Economics). Starting in 1996 under Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Adnan, MSc, Professor of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology and also former Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The Foundation deemed it necessary to change the name of UNWAMA to Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMB Yogya) in May 2008 (Decree of the Foundation, and Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education dated June 12, 2008). Through the Decree of the Wangsa Manggala Foundation Number: 02/SKep/Ket/YWM/IV/2008 dated April 1, 2008, the Universitas Wangsa Manggala (UNWAMA) officially changed its name to Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMBY). Officially on June 12, 2008, it was ratified by the Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 102/D/O/2008 Concerning the Change of Name of the Universitas Wangsa Manggala of Yogyakarta to Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta which is organized by the Wangsa Manggala Foundation of Yogyakarta.

UMB Yogya, which has gained the trust of the community, is improving itself by organizing its performance to welcome the global era in the third millennium. To anticipate the rapid development of science and technology, in 2008 new study programs were opened, such as: Informatics Engineering, Information Systems, Communication Science, English Language Education and Mathematics. These study programs increasingly complement the previously existing study programs, namely: Masters in Psychology, Psychology, Management, Accounting, Agrotechnology (Agronomy), Animal Husbandry Industry and Agricultural Product Technology.

The vision to be achieved is to become a university that has a commitment to realizing the progress and welfare of society in accordance with the ideals embedded in the motto Angudi Mulyaning Bangsa (The Pursuit of Excellence). Having excellence in the fields of education and teaching, research and community service both nationally and internationally. While the mission of UMB Yogya is to implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education to educate the nation so as to help society to realize its welfare.
